A multi-faceted approach to the study of commuting
Despite empirical data suggesting that commuting accidents are a major problem worldwide, research on employee behavior while commuting by car is scant. In particular, our understanding of the antecedents of unsafe commuting behavior is limited mainly to demographic variables, variables related to the nature of the ride, and physical working conditions and stressors. The study addresses this lacuna by adopting a broader perspective to investigate antecedents of commuting behavior, incorporating theories from emotional, normative and cognitive domains. Furthermore, I offer a first of its kind outlook on potential outcomes of the unsafe commuting behavior as a standalone stressor that may influence both employees and organizations. I used a two-wave design and collected data from employees who responded at two different points in time. The findings suggest that the commuting norms characterizing employees’ referent groups have an important role in commuting behavior. Furthermore, need for recovery is positively related to unsafe commuting behavior only among employees who perceive themselves as being subjected to distributive and procedural injustice. Finally, unsafe commuting behavior is positively associated with turnover intentions and negatively associated with job performance, with employee perceptions of trust moderating these relationships.
